Oh, that’s not–
It has been a while since I mentioned Jennifer Lopez in this newsletter. In fact, one of my earliest newsletters was J.Lo. I'm happy to bring her back for the holiday season.
Earlier this week, Jennifer was presented with an award with no significant weight to the name, an Elle’s Women in Hollywood Icon Award. During her acceptance speech, she listed how she has never won any major awards in her 30 years in music and film/television but has five icon awards.
This self-drag might have cured my depression. She made it so easy for us haters! And I have to say, the comments on my TikTok made this story even more comical.

Though this is her fifth icon award, on the red carpet, she was asked to name a female artist who is having a better year than her (and probably has prominent awards that are not just made-up icon awards), and you can see she did not want to answer the question. After giving us unprovoked vocals that never seemed to find the correct notes, she dodged the question and answered, “I mean all of them, they're all pretty amazing.” Yet, the journalist wanted her to give a concrete answer, and finally, she landed on the safe choice…Taylor Swift.
She did not want to answer that question because this was her night–A five-time “icon” recipient with no EGOT in sight.
Selena Gomez has a new boyfriend
On December 7, Selena Gomez confirmed is dating music producer Benny Blanco and became extra weird on Instagram. A Selena Gomez stan account shared a photo of the new couple, and in the comments, Selena went from confirming the relationship to being 2010 social media unhinged.
"He is my absolute everything in my heart," she replied one comment, before commenting to another fan: "then why has he been the best thing that's ever happened to me. The end."
Selena could have left the comment and not catch the urge to scroll the comments and retaliate, but I understand because I relapse and spiral almost every day on Twitter/TikTok. Reading through all of her replies ignited a rush inside of me! I miss the days when celebs posted regular photos on their Instagrams and would go off the rails on randoms on Twitter. Since standom took over social media, everyone has been on their best behavior, and it’s quite boring. And though, we have Britney, who has created her own lane of social media unhinge in her own way, it’s not nearly as fun as when a celeb randomly attacks a stranger (especially their own stans) for no reason.
We’ll never have early 2010s Rihanna Twitter clapbacks
Or when Katy Perry used to publicly bully (or inside jokes?) with Sky Ferreira.
Let’s bring back unhinged social media behavior in 2024 and leave boring social media presence to Beyonce (this is a compliment).
No one works harder than Taylor Swift’s PR manager
2023 was undeniably Taylor Swift’s year! With a huge stadium tour to celebrate her 15-year career, releasing all of her previous albums, a breakup, and back-to-back romance – no one did it better than Tay Tay. It’s no surprise she would be given tons of accolades to recognize all of her achievements. I mean, I never search any news on Taylor Swift, I even have her name muted on every Twitter account I own, and yet, she still finds ways to be front and center against my will. I think we all forgot she dated Matt Healy who openly and proudly si
PEOPLE named her Most Intriguing Person of the Year…a title I’ve never heard of before, but glad she got the title. The biggest of them all, Time magazine, named her 2023 Person of the Year. The experts were beyond deranged, and it’s giving 2010s social media unhinged. Let’s dive into some of my favorite quotes:
Her thoughts on the intersection of patriarchy, money, and art:
“What has existed since the dawn of time? A patriarchal society. What fuels a patriarchal society? Money, flow of revenue, the economy. So, actually, if we’re going to look at this in the most cynical way possible, feminine ideas becoming lucrative means that more female art will get made. It’s extremely heartening.”
This is Taylor’s attempt at the feminist monologue in Barbie (2023).
On having ‘enemies’ within the music industry:
“I’ve also learned there’s no point in actively trying to quote unquote defeat your enemies. Trash takes itself out every time.”
This woman thrives on victimhood.
On the comparisons between the ‘Eras Tour’ and Beyoncé’s ‘RENAISSANCE’ tour:
“There were so many stadium tours this summer, but the only ones that were compared were me and Beyoncé. Clearly it’s very lucrative for the media and stan culture to pit two women against each other, even when those two artists in question refuse to participate in that discussion.”
The smartest thing she said in the entire interview. And she’s correct!
On training for the ‘Eras Tour’ six months before it started:
“Every day I would run on the treadmill, singing the entire set list out loud. Fast for fast songs, and a jog or a fast walk for slow songs. Then I had three months of dance training, because I wanted to get it in my bones. I wanted to be so over-rehearsed that I could be silly with the fans, and not lose my train of thought.”
On the public opinion of her:
“I’ve been raised up and down the flagpole of public opinion so many times in the last 20 years. I’ve been given a tiara, then had it taken away. It feels like the breakthrough moment of my career, happening at 33. And for the first time in my life, I was mentally tough enough to take what comes with that.”
Says the woman who has three Album of the Year awards. Victimhood #2
On her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
“You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar. That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard.”
I understand the re-release of ‘Reputation’ will be released soon, however, I really want this feud to die. And for someone who enjoys a good celebrity feud, that’s telling. Victimhood #3
On getting canceled?
“The first was getting canceled within an inch of my life and sanity. The second was having my life’s work taken away from me by someone who hates me.”
Victimhood #4
On re-recording all of her albums (I’ll never forgive Kelly Clarkson and Scooter Braun)
“I’m collecting horcruxes. I’m collecting infinity stones. Gandalf’s voice is in my head every time I put out a new one. For me, it is a movie now”
This is very—I spent way too much time reading Stan Twitter—coded, which is why this does not translate well off-online. As a very online person, this doesn’t make any sense, but I can detect a Swiftie has probably tweeted something similar vernacular.
On dating Travis Kelce
“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell. We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other. By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple. I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”
I don’t think any normal human being who learned of this coupling after she attended the Chiefs game thought that was their first date. Absolutely no one. In fact, we learned how the relationship developed because we have been inundated with daily updates since the podcast episode.
More on their relationship
“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care. The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
Her PR game is very good because we all forgot she dated Matt Healy this summer, who is extremely problematic. I personally think that’s why she’s extremely public with her relationship with Travis.
